Weight of Gems

Do you make gems and jewelry weigh anything?

I noticed this line in the SRD: 1 Stone per 1000gp or gems

That seems pretty hefty! Thoughts?

part of the value of gems in my game is that I say they weigh effectively nothing.  Certainly, they should be lighter than gold coins.  I feel like the point at which you are encumbered by gemstones is the point that you have become so fabulously wealthy that you should have enough henchmen that exist for the express purpose of hauling your gear.

1 stone per 1,000 gems doesn't sound unreasonable-- that would put your average gemstone weight at ~22.6 carat. Even for the cheapest gems, that's still a good wealth compression.

Rules-as-written, it's 1 stone per 1000 gems. That certainly means these are fairly big gems, but I also hand-wave any need for wrapping/protection/etc.

I use a house rule that jewelry worn conspicuously weighs nothing. I want my PCs to roll through town all blinged out.

That is AWESOME.

Actually, I think it is a rule that would work well with what you’re currently Kickstarting. It’s very Conan, I think (I also stole that houserule from someone else.)

Yes, yes it is!

I stole this rule for my table the day you posted it, thirdkingdom. :)

I know a Priestess character of mine explicitly wears as much of her treasure as jewelry (Sacred Courtesan)  as possible, because our Judge ruled it is pretty much like clothing, and thus weightless.  There is also the fact that she has come to the realization that the guy carrying our "Bag Of Holding" is liable to fall into a fire pit one day and POOF, there goes everyone's treasure.
