Adventurer Conqueror King Makes the New York Times

Autarch’s Adventurer Conqueror King System is covered in today’s Arts section of the New York Times! The piece, “Players Roll the Dice for Dungeons & Dragons Remake,” also breaks the news about a new edition of another fantasy role-playing game that will probably make this one one of the most-read Times articles among gamers for some time to come.

Author Ethan Gilsdorf reached out to Tavis Allison for quotes for the piece. His original citation of Tavis as “a game designer in New York and co-author of his own role-playing game, Adventurer Conqueror King” was edited in a way that gave the impression that Tavis was solely responsible for ACKS. In any case, space surely would have prevented acknowledging all the people who contributed, including lead designer Alexander Macris; developer Greg Tito*; lead artist Ryan Browning and his co-illustrators Chris Hagerty and Jonathan Bingham; graphic designer Carrie Keymel, production designer Greg Lincoln, and web designer Tim Turner. And that’s not even going into all the Kickstarter backers who made ACKS possible, all the members of our gaming groups who helped us learn everything that went into the design, and the predecessors on whose work we’ve built, from Chris Gonnerman and Daniel Proctor to Tom Moldvay, Gary Gygax, and Dave Arneson.

To everyone who helped create Adventurer Conqueror King: please take a bow in this spotlight while we’ve got it!

*Actually, Greg is mentioned in his role at the Escapist, without making the link back to ACKS.

Just found out about this ruleset. While I am skeptical about what you are doing (which was a natural side-effect of reading a lot of retro-clones), I am also interested in seeing more user-friendly old-school rule sets. Does a free copy of the PDF come with orders for physical copies?

Thanks.

Thanks for checking us out.

If you order a hardcover of the game, you get a PDF. You can also get a PDF separately.

Also, if you order the PDF and decide you like it enough to want a physical copy, the $10 PDF will contain a coupon that you can take to your local retailer or our online store to buy the hardcopy for $10 off. We know that having something in both electronic and physical copies makes it a lot more useful to a gamer, so we want to do everything we can to make the print + PDF bundle the default.

Thanks for the quick response. By “hardcover” do you mean the hardback version only or will the PDF also come with the softback?

PS - It is unlikely that I will buy this locally as my FLGS is board-game focused and I am not really interested in patronizing the store with better RPG stock and poor customer service, but I still think that the coupon is a great idea.

The PDF will come with both hardcover and softcover. However we are focusing on making the hardback available to stores and online (through our site and Game Salute); the softcover will only be available to our Kickstarter backers, pre-orders, and through our digital partners.

Do you have a spam problem on this site; I also
am a blogger, and I was curious about your situation; many of us have developed some nice procedures and we are looking
to trade methods with other folks, why not shoot me an e-mail if
interested.
