New Spells When You Level Up

Starting spells is pretty clear. You begin with 1 + your Int Bonus.
But, How many spells do you automatically learn when you level up?
Is it:
A) your spells per day + your Int bonus
or
B) your spells per day
Right now, the rules say:
For starting spells:
//If the mage has an INT of at least 13, he may start the game with additional 1st level spells in his repertoire, up to his Intelligence bonus.//
This makes sense. His repertoire includes all the spells in his spellbook.
//Their masters will teach them spells equal to the number and level of spells the caster can use in a single day.//
A Mage can USE less spells than he typically has in his spellbook… So, do you mean USE as in “number he can cast” or “number he can hold in his spellbook”.
The use of the word “USE” isn’t the clearest in this sense.
“Their masters will teach them spells equal to the number and level of spells the caster can cast in a single day.”
Would a 2nd Level Mage with a 16 Int who becomes 3rd Level (thereby getting access to 2nd Level spells) learn:
A) one 2nd level spell
or
B) three 2nd level spells
?

Their masters will teach them spells equal to the number and level of spells the caster can cast in a single day.
I’ll adjust the language in the rules. Thanks for catching the vagueness, this is a good fix.

Still somewhat vague; it seems that the mage above learns one second level spell at third level, but when he reaches level 4, does he learn one more second level spell or two more second level spells (for a total of three known)?
Also, is the maximum number of spells in his spellbook equal to the number he can cast per day plus his INT bonus for each spell level?

If the caster does nothing else (finds no scrolls, no other spellbooks), his repertoire will consist, at each level, of exactly the number of spells he can cast per day. His INT bonus would be irrelevant.
You are correct about the max ## of spells in the spellbook.

//If the caster does nothing else (finds no scrolls, no other spellbooks), his repertoire will consist, at each level, of exactly the number of spells he can cast per day. His INT bonus would be irrelevant.//
This is true except for 1st level right? At first level, he automatically gets bonus spells, yes?

Right.

Great.
One more quick question:
Say, I level up to 3rd Level Mage. I get my single 2nd Level Spell, but I have a +2 Intelligence modifier.
Does it cost any money to add spells to my spellbook if I have extra slots in my repertoire that are unfilled? Or, is this “free” to add outside of the time it takes?
It doesn’t say specifically that costs money, but to rewrite a spell from memory and to replace a spell does cost money.
Is that correct?

Shameless bump on the quick question.

Michael,
Adding spells does not cost money, merely time. However, you have to have a source from which you are adding spells. Those sources might be captured spellbooks or scrolls.
At 5th level or higher, you can pursue spell research, which costs money and time, but acquires new spells without a scroll or spellbook as a source.
EXAMPLES:
Pfaff has just reached 3rd level mage. His master teaches him “invisibility”. Pfaff has an INT of 16, so he has a +2 INT modifier and can learn 2 more 2nd level spells. Paff owns a scroll of “levitation”. He can scribe this scroll into his spellbook, taking 1 week. This uses up the scroll.
Later, Pfaff reaches 5th level mage. His master teaches him “clairvoyance.” Deeply annoyed at this useless spell (heh), Pfaff decides to research “fireball”. This costs 3,000gp and takes 6 weeks of research.

Awesome. Thank you!
