Encumberance Question (Thrassians)

Ok, quick question here. I’m sure as usual I’m simply missing some sentence somewhere in the book that answers this but I can’t seem to find it.

How exactly does encumbrance work for a class like the Thrassian Gladiator who already has a slower base movement rate than most other characters?

I have a Thrassian Gladiator character. His base movement is 60’. When he carries 6 stone worth of items what happens? Is he slowed down to the next lowest movement tier (30’)? Or is he basically not effected by encumberance until he is carrying over 10 stone? If he does drop down to the next level, which also happens to be the lowest level, what happens when he carries say 8 stone? Does he just continue to move at 30’ until he’s reached his maximum carrying limit?

I had the same dilemma when investigating the Thrassian’s scaly hide racial feature. I concluded that since it does not mention his scaly hide counting toward his encumbrance he is effectively carrying 0 stone. So carrying 10 stone would not lower his base movement any further.

This question is answered in Domains at War. Obviously you’d look in our mass combat system for your encumbrance answers!

I promise to fix some of these oddities if we ever do ACKS 2ed.

NORMAL LOAD
Some creatures are valued primarily for their ability to carry equipment, supplies, or treasure. The figure listed is the normal load the creature can carry in stone. Most creatures can carry a maximum of twice their normal load. When carrying more than their normal load, their movement rate is reduced to half.

EXAMPLE: A giant tiger beetle can carry its normal load of 250 stone at its full movement rate of 150’ per turn. It can carry up to 500 stone at 75’ per turn.

Humanoids can endure heavier loads, relative to their own size. Humanoids may carry their normal load at full movement. They may carry up to half again of their normal load at three-quarters movement. They may carry up to twice their normal load at half movement. They may carry up to four times their normal load at one-quarter movement.

EXAMPLE: A cyclops can carry 90 stone at its full movement rate of 90’ per turn. It can carry up to 135 stone at 67’ per turn. It can carry up to 180 stone at 45’ per turn. It can carry up to 360 stone at 22’ per turn.

Normal Loads
Bugbear 13
Centaur 42
Dwarf 5
Elf 5
Faerie, Pixie 1
Faerie, Sprite ½
Gnoll 10
Gnome 2
Goblin 3
Halfling 1
Human 5
Hobgoblin 7
Kobold 3
Lizardman 8
Merman 12
Minotaur 25
Morlock 5
Neanderthal 7
Nymph, Dryad 3
Nymph, Naiad 3
Ogre 40
Orc 7
Troglodyte 5

THEREFORE:
A lizardman (Thrassian) can carry up to 8 stone at 60’ movement. They can carry 12 stone at 45’ movement. They can carry up to 16 stone at 30’ movement. The can carry up to 32 stone at 15’ movement.

A creature’s own natural armor does NOT count for its encumbrance.

PS Brandonshire, you should change your avatar, it’s over-sized for our forums

Thanks! Yeah, I just added the avatar, and initially it wasn’t showing up at all, now it’s showing up too big.

But yeah, this is definitely helpful info. I actually did back D@W, but haven’t had a chance to look through the books yet. I should get on that for all kinds of useful info like this!
