Charm Animal and Beast Friendship

My playears are facing an elephant summoned by using a Figurine of Wondrous Power. Would Charm Animal or Beast Friendship have any effect upon it?

As far as I can tell a Figurine of Wondrous Power is not an item released in an ACKS product :stuck_out_tongue:

So I am not an Autarch, but my inclination is to say ‘you brought in the magic item, you figure it out’.

(That said, for me, the answer depends on how you think the figurine works; does it summon an animal or is it a construct? If it summons an animal, they should work, if it’s a construct they should not.)

I don't know if there's any guidelines on whether the elephant is a 'normal animal' or not...assuming so, then:

I'd assume Beast Friendship would not work; as L&E states it tames an animal if the animal is recruited as a henchmen - and I assume (dunno what source you're using, or how many interpretations of the item there are...) the Figurine is supposed to obey it's owner, and I'd posit that magical control trumps mundane efforts.

I'd consider letting Charm work, though, maybe rule that it 'cancels' the control so the animal goes dormant/calm at best? I don't know if anyone's ever asked about competing charms before. Even if not a normal animal, Charm Monster may work, and I guess a Dispel could force it back into statue form?

I was going to let Protection from Evil and Dispel Magic work on it, so I think I will likely prevent Charm Animal from working.

Surely it'd work however Charm Person works on Summoned Beserkers or Hero or any similar one. Of course, you have to work out how they work first :D

Do you have a reference for where it says that?

I don't think there is a reference. But I suspect that Nimas was suggesting that, if you allow Charm Animal in this case, then, to be consistent, you'd ALSO need to allow Charm Person to work on the summoned warriors for the spells he mentioned.

....maybe. Prefacing this by admitting I'm being disgustingly pedantic and will flog myself later in penance, the Figurine could very well be a real elephant or whatever magick'd into miscellaneous item form (full state change), where the berserkers are more likely to be "unreal"/"extraplanar"/whatever and as such could be uncharmpersonable, as they may not be "persons".

The way I see it is that the elephant is a product of conjuration and as such should not be affected by charm effects. It also seems a matter of whether a first or second level spell be able to not only negate but reverse (charming the elephant and sending it after the conjurer) the power of a specialty item created by a 9th+ level caster.
