Question regarding mortality checks and recovery

So after several sessions of my players mucking about Muntberg they finally decided to enter Dwimmermount. They were making good progress, but in their first combat one of the characters (the mystic) was reduced to -1 hp. After the combat, the 1st level bladedancer successfully cast cure light wounds (using the overcasting rules from Axiom), and the result rolled on the d20+d6 was a 20 and 3. We are also using the beta rules from the upcoming Heroic Fantasy Companion regarding healing and mortal wounds.

As I understand it, the mystic is at 1 hp, and cannot gain any additional hit points until he has completed the initial mandatory period of rest.

  • Since the initial treating of wounds came from magical healing, does this mean that the mandatory period of rest is only 1 day, or is an additional measure of magical healing need to be applied to reduce the mandatory period of rest from 1 week to 1 day?
  • If the wizard's familiar (a small totoro dragging a bone saw along behind it) with the healing proficiency also treats the mystic, and gets a result that would trigger the equivalent of a cure light or cure serious wounds spell, would that count as magical healing to reduce the number of days of required bedrest?

I would say that the initial magical healing already gave a bonus and therefore he would need an additional spell cast. The fact that he rolled well on the table does not remove the need for magical healing to improve his state.

The healing proficiency is only equivalent to a spell, not a spell in itself so I dont think it should count.

In my game I allow healing magic to do double duty, both providing a bonus to the Mortal Wounds d20 roll and counting as "receiving magical healing" for the purposes of avoiding death or shortening the recovery period.

The magical healing used in treating of wounds counts. 1 day.

No, Healing proficiency isn't magical healing.

Ooh, interesting! I'd assumed that since healing worked as cure light wounds, it would also speed recovery.

Thank you for the responses to my questions. My current batch of players who saw their 1st level mystic go to -1 hit points from 1 blow, and who will need a couple of days to get his hit points back, should be getting disabused of the 3.5/5E notion of how durable 1st level characters are.

This might be an area where a future edition of ACKS might better state that the Healing Proficiency can only simulate a cure spell in terms of hit points healed only, but I'm not sure how this could be succinctly worded. I fear that sometimes adding language to clear up certain scenarios might become cumbersome.
